Cognitive
Hypnotherapy
Cognitive Hypnotherapy can help with a wide
range of 'problems', such as phobias, lack
of confidence or self-esteem, ill-health,
pain, depression, unresolved issues and emotions,
addictions, post-traumatic stress disorder,
obsessive compulsive disorders, feelings
of being 'stuck' in life or career, anxiety
and panic attacks, stress, anger, fear, eating
disorders, and many more. It can also be
extremely effective as a form of life coaching.

What is Cognitive Hypnotherapy?
Cognitive Hypnotherapy is a solution-based therapy
(with a strong focus on the positive, the future,
and a clearly defined objective), developed by
The Quest
Institute,
with the aim of achieving a successful outcome
for clients in the shortest possible time. The
first session includes discussing with clients
the nature of their 'problem', what they want from
therapy and why, and agreeing on what can be practically
and reasonably achieved - the 'solution'.
Cognitive Hypnotherapists acknowledge that each client is unique and, therefore, the problem for which they seek help needs a unique approach, adapted specifically for them. Each person perceives the world and reacts to external circumstances differently from anyone else; our experiences and outlooks are different, our memories, beliefs and values are different - each of us is programmed to interpret the world in a unique way. My training has given me a wide range of techniques and resources to give me wonderful flexibility in offering tailor-made therapy for each client, effectively and quickly.
The therapy process is an equal partnership, as
I guide my clients to awaken or create their own
inner resources to achieve what they want. The
approach where the therapist is in complete control,
whilst the client sits back expecting to be "fixed" does
not form part of Cognitive Hypnotherapy. Success
involves clients taking responsibility for their
improvement or development.
Cognitive Hypnotherapy is based on research in cognition (how we know, perceive and learn), evolutionary psychology and neuroscience, and utilises techniques and ideas from Hypnotherapy, NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), Cognitive Therapy, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and other therapy models. The use of language and suggestion is a powerful way to communicate with the unconscious and to achieve change, and the creation and development of Wordweaving, a pattern of hypnotic language, by The Quest Institute is integral to my work with clients.
The therapy's focus is the unconscious mind and how it drives behaviour: how the brain acquires, interprets and holds information, how it makes patterns of meaning, and connections between one event and another, and how we create our perception of the world around us; it looks at our underlying beliefs, values and assumptions; in fact, everything which, usually unconsciously, has led to the creation of the 'problem' emotion or behaviour. It looks at what is limiting us and what might be blocking our innate resources and gifts.
Neuroscience has observed that the conscious mind is only responsible for 5% or less of our behaviour during the day and that 95-99% is derived from the unconscious. So if change is aimed only at the conscious mind, it can take considerable time and will-power for it to reach down to what could be considered the more powerful unconscious. By appealing to the latter directly, change may take place more quickly.
Cognitive Hypnotherapy looks at past, present and future, although it may concentrate more on one than on another, depending on the client's problem. However, it focuses on the future more than many other therapies do. Some forms of traditional hypnotherapy believe that regression and reliving a traumatic emotion is an essential part of the healing process, whereas I only use regression for a specific purpose - and with the client's permission - either to reinterpret or reframe a past emotional event (so as to change a response to it) or to reinforce a positive experience for present and future change.
